What is the role of Cosopt Eye Drop?

Cosopt is an astonishing ophthalmic preparation that is used to treat high intraocular pressure in eyes. This medication lowers the pressure inside the eyes by releasing the fluid (aqueous humor). This medication is thus employed in conditions of high intraocular pressure such as open angle-glaucoma, thereby preventing blindness.

What is the action mechanism of Cosopt Eye Drop?

Cosopt embodies two main active ingredients namely Dorzolamide and Timolol. Dorzolamide belongs to the class of sulfonamide which is a carbonic anhydrase II (CA-II) inhibitor, which is involved in aqueous humor secretion. Inhibition of CA-II in the ciliary processes of the eye reduces the formation of aqueous humor secretion thereby reducing intraocular pressure. Timolol, on the other hand, belongs to the class of β- blockers that are also accountable for the reduction of pressure inside the eyes, thereby treating open-angle glaucoma and other disorders.

What is the right method of using Cosopt eye drops?

The commercially available dosing strength of Cosopt eye drops is 5ml containing 2%w/v Dorzolamide and 0.5%w/v Timolol.  To alleviate the condition of high intraocular pressure firstly make sure your hands are clean and dry. Now tilt back your head and pull the lower eyelid. Unstill a single eye drop and close your eyes for 15 seconds. Repeat the same process in another eye as well.  Use these eye drops twice daily and avoid contact with the mouth.
