Neo-Mercazole tablet is an anti-thyroid medicine consists of generic medicine called Carbimazole. It is used in the treatment of hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid), also called as thyrotoxicosis. It is also used as a therapy used to set up a person for thyroidectomy, and before radio-iodine treatment. Carbimazole acts by preventing the activity thyroid gland and reduces the generation of thyroxine hormone.

How can Neo-Mercazole tablet be used?

Initially, a patient can use 60 mg of Neo-Mercazole orally with an enormous amount of water and it should be taken in divided doses. In the case of mild and moderate thyrotoxicosis, a patient can take 20 mg and 40 mg of Neo-Mercazole. While in severe cases, a patient can take 40mg to 60 mg of Neo-Mercazole. When symptoms are controlled the dosage should be reduced to a maintenance level, then a person can take 10mg to 15mg of Neo-Mercazole taken as a single daily dose.

What are the contraindications of Neo-Mercazole tablet?

The use of Neo-Mercazole tablet is contraindicated under certain medical conditions such as serious, pre-existing hematological conditions, severe hepatic insufficiency, airway obstruction, and hypersensitivity to Neo-Mercazole. It is also contraindicated if a patient has allergic reactions with Thiamazole, Methimazole or Propylthiouracil.

What to do in case of an overdose of Neo-Mercazole tablet?

An overdose of Neo-Mercazole tablet can cause skin rash, mouth ulcer, severe chills, or a sore throat. In case, if you encounter these symptoms while using this medicine then seek an immediate emergency help to treat your overdosing symptoms.

Precautionary steps of Neo-Mercazole tablet:

  • You have to stop taking Neo-Mercazole tablet temporarily at the time of administration of radio-iodine.
  • Patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance should not use this medicine.
  • If you have an intrathoracic goitre, then avoid using this medicine.

What are the noxious effects of Neo-Mercazole tablet?

A patient can experience some noxious effects of Neo-Mercazole tablet such as headache, nausea, hair thinning, itchiness, hives, rashes in the skin, joint ache, stomach upset, and change in taste.

What are the drug interactions of Neo-Mercazole tablet?

There are some medicines that show interaction with Neo-Mercazole tablets such as anticoagulants, Theophylline, Prednisolone, Erythromycin, Digitalis, and Beta-blockers such as Propanolol and Timolol.
